A practical guide for descendants and researchers.
The same village may appear differently across family memory, church records, civil records, maps and publications. Record the spelling exactly as each source gives it before normalizing anything.
Depending on period and source, place names may appear in Polish, Lemko/Rusyn, Ukrainian, Slovak, Hungarian, German or other administrative forms.
If a village name is uncertain, nearby towns, parishes, rivers, mountain passes, railway stations and neighboring villages can help identify the correct location.
When the remaster eventually builds village indexes, older spellings should be retained as searchable aliases rather than silently replaced by one modern form.
