A Lemko voice in America

Maria Honcharyk (also recorded as Marja Honcharyk and Maria Geriak Honcharik) was a Lemko singer from Hanczowa whose voice was preserved on Columbia records made in New York. The seven recordings in this collection range from lyrical songs to staged dialogue and scenes of everyday life. These seven discs are presented here as one curated collection, with direct listening links to the digitizations on LemkoHUB.

The records also preserve the names of other contributors, including M. W. Duzey, Leonija Malinovskaya, and the ensemble associated with Pavlo Vasilets. Historical label credits and modern spellings are kept distinct.

Our archival principle: LEMKO.org provides the documentation; LemkoHUB provides the music. The original historical spelling and commercial classifications are preserved as evidence of their time, with modern context provided separately.

Honcharyk family gathering, Yonkers, September 15, 1946. Clearer family-sourced photograph, reproduced in Horbal–Maksimovich (2008). Maria Honcharyk is identified in the 2008 publication as seated third from the left. The gathering honored returning WWII servicemen and family name days.

Contemporary published source. The 1947 Lemko-Soyuz / Carpatho-Russian Calendar, p. 132, documents the gathering and its participants. The event occurred in 1946, not 1947.
The clearer photograph was obtained through Maria Honcharyk's descendants in 2007. Preserve the original group image and full historical identifications; do not crop the other participants away.
