The recordings now known through Lemko Wedding and Life-Sketches: Carpatho-Rusyns in New York, April 1928–Sept. 1930 preserve Lemko immigrant performance from the era of commercial 78 rpm records. Stefan Shkymba recorded for Columbia Records in this period.
The physical records survive
Original 78 rpm records from Walter Maksimovich's collection became source material for later research and restoration. The discs are therefore not merely old sound carriers: their survival made renewed access to this repertoire possible.
Research and rediscovery
Walter Maksimovich and Bogdan Horbal researched early Lemko recordings in America. Ian Nagoski later worked with Maksimovich on the Canary Records project, with Maksimovich contributing source records, title translations and research.
