Two Eras of Digital Preservation

LEMKO.org reflects the way the Web itself changed.

1996 → the early Web archive

LEMKO.org became the place where photographs, documents, maps, scholarship, genealogy, community pages and early multimedia were gathered directly onto a website. Much of today's remaster is devoted to making that first era usable again without destroying its original structure.

Later years → YouTube and Facebook

As the Web changed, much newer material was naturally published through video and social platforms rather than copied back into LEMKO.org. That is not a missing section of the archive; it records a change in how Lemko material was shared and how communities interacted online.

Today → complementary roles

LEMKO.org preserves and explains the historical digital archive. LemkoHUB carries music and audiovisual preservation. Facebook and other social spaces can continue to serve current community exchange and discovery.

Remaster principle: we will not try to manufacture continuity by copying twenty years of later social-media material back into LEMKO.org. Where useful, the archive can point outward to the later material while preserving the earlier Web era on its own terms.
