Documenting Lemko Churches

A simple archival guide for photographs and memories.

← Religious Heritage

Identify the place

Record the village name, spelling variants, approximate date of the photograph and the direction or viewpoint when known.

Identify the building

Record dedication/name, denomination or jurisdiction for the period being documented, construction or rebuilding dates when known, and whether the structure survives.

Identify the people

If clergy, parishioners, wedding parties, choirs or processions appear, record names and the occasion whenever possible.

Preserve changes over time

Do not discard photographs simply because a church has been altered, moved, repurposed or destroyed. A sequence of images can document the history of the building and its community.

Keep source and interpretation separate

Write down what the photograph or inscription actually shows first. Add later historical explanation as a separate editorial note with its source.
