STATISTICS
PARISH STATISTICS
* When the
statistics for a main church include those of its: filial churches: and/or
localities, they are either given separately for the filial churches and
localities, or they are included in the statistics of the main church.
When they are included in those of the main church the expression in matre
is used. If they are recorded separately, two sets of statistics appear
for the main church, e.g. those included for the main church itself and
the total statistics: for the main church and all dependents.
DEANERY STATISTICS
* Statistics:
for the deaneries: are reported as printed in the respective shematisms
For each year, unless there is an obvious mistake, in which case the number
of faithful reported in the parishes was retotaled. The corrected totals
are always marked with an *.
GENERAL EPARCHIAL STATISTICS
* Total numbers of priests are extremely difficult to ascertain for each year. The shematisms
give these numbers by categories which are not always the same from year
to year, and it is never clear whether a priest could belong to more than
one category. I have tried to get the total as well as possible, even including
the newly ordained priests in the number. In the later shematisms the number
was obtainable by getting the total of married, celibate and widowered
priests. When the information was included in the annual summaries, I also
noted the number of celibate priests:. In the earlier years only rarely
was an eparchial priest ordained as celibate, and the celibate priests
were frequently sent for further study or marked for a higher position
in the eparchy .
* The religious priests
can be totaled fairly accurately because they arc listed under their monasteries,
and as far as possible they are not included in the total of the eparchial
priests, although several were doing parish work and the distinction is:
not always clear.
* Main churches are defined as churches: which are listed by number under the deaneries, whether they
are parishes. local chapels or independent assistantships. The annual totals
given for main churches have been calculated by totaling the numbers from
all the deaneries, no matter what number is printed in the annual summaries.
For the most part they agree, but not always. Filial churches are a bigger
problem and I did the best I could to give an accurate number.
* Students: (sern ) are
all those studying in L'viv, Peremyshl', Vienna, Rome or elsewhere
* OSBM lay brothers: (OSBM brs.) and women religious. (srs) include only professed religious
* Corrections. in the deanery statistics: cause a change in the general population totals for each year
In such cases, the corrected annual deanery statistics are marked with
an * and the annual total populations for the eparchy arc placed under
the printed total populations. Unfortunately, there may have been mistakes
I missed. because if the deanery statistics were reasonable, I did not
check them. Otherwise, the work would never have been finished for publication.
