Mykola Musinka: Hlasy Predkov/Голоси Предків ["Voices of Ancestors"],
sound recordings of Transcarpathian folklore from the archives of Ivan Pankevyc
(1929, 1935)

In the last decade of the 19th century, attempts were made in different countries at recording sounds for purposes of linguistics and the study of folklore. In 1899 a phonographic institute was founded at the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. During the First World War, its activities increased and with use of a phonograph, recordings were made of the dialect and folklore used by Ukrainian prisoners of war interned in Austrian camps. These were supervised by a professor of the Consular Academy in Vienna. Ivan Pankevyc (1887-1958), who between 1920 and 1939 worked in Transcarpathian Ukraine as a secondary school teacher, editor, public servant and passionate researcher of the dialect and folklore of the local population. At the first convention of Slavic philologists in Prague in the summer of 1929, he delivered a lecture on the phonograph and its value for the study of linguistics, a lecture which aroused widespread interest.
In October 1929, under the auspices of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Pankevyc accompanied 14 folk narrators and singers to Prague, performers from Transcarpathian Ukraine as well as Ukrainian localities in Eastern Slovakia. Using sound equipment made by the French firm Pathe, he recorded 14 extracts of folk prose, 20 folk songs and 4 descriptions of ceremonies. In November 1935, at the behest of Pankevyc, the Prague Radiojournal recorded 80 folk songs in Uzhgorod. 36 musical compositions and four separate dance melodies by six folk ensembles (Rachiv, Neresnycja, Imstychevo, Vyshni Veretzky, Volosjanka and Turja-Rakove). In total. 28 double-sided gramophone records were made from these two events containing 135 examples of folk songs, fairy tales, legends and customs from 16 Ukrainian localities situated between the High Tatras and Hoverla. The daughter of I. Pankevyc, Marta Dolnycka, gave these very precious recordings to M. Musinka after her father's death. Musinka then wrote down all the texts of the songs, retaining the elements of dialect, wrote down the musical score and organised the whole anthology in a way which is thematically clear and consistent. This anthology has now. after many years, been made available to the reading public.
These are the oldest existing recordings we have of Ukrainian folklore of Transcarpathian Ruthenia and Eastern Slovakia. The work also contains a study of the life of I. Pankevyc and the history of his collection of recordings. Full texts, commentaries and descriptions of ceremonies are included to accompany certain extracts which, for reasons of space, are included on the records only in fragments or abridged versions. As a supplement to the book, readers can also obtain a CD containing all 135 recordings, the quality of which has been enhanced by modern technology (much of the hissing and extraneous noise has been removed). The reader can compare the written text in the book with the recorded version. All the texts (including the introductory studies and commentaries) are given in both Slovak and Ukrainian (Cyrillic), while dialect words that do not occur in the two written languages are explained in a separate glossary.
The book is the only one of its kind not only in the fields of Ukrainian and Slovak ethnomusicology but also in the much broader field of Slavonic studies. Of special value to ethnologists, linguists, musicologists and students of folklore, it can also serve as a source of inspiration for both professional and amateur musical ensembles. Above all however, Voices of Ancestors will be of value to the general public of Transcarpathia. The present-day inhabitants of Jarabina, Mikulasova. Ruska Poruba, Pychne, Ubl'a, Nevyckyj, Volosjanka. Imstychevo, Verchnyje Vorota, Rachov, Velky Byckov and other localities probably do not know that music, songs and tales sang and told by their grandparents and great-grandparents have been preserved on vinyl for later generations. In a way it was the same for the singers and musicians who apparently never had the chance to hear the recordings, the reason being that only very few copies of the records were made and those that were made were only for the use of the Czech Academy and the Kosice studio of Prague Radio. Also it is clear that none of the performers owned either a gramophone or a wireless receiver at that time. The projected publication will enlighten descendants about the little-known activities of their relatives and fellow citizens. There they will find the real voices of their predecessors. Probably not one of those who spoke, sang and played for I. Pankevyc back in 1929 and 1935 is still alive, but their speech, songs and music will live on to be appreciated by future generations.
Credit for this book must go to Professor Ivan Pankevyc, to the Czech Academy of Science and Prague Radio, and also, of course, to the fifty or more Transcarpathian folk performers, all of whom worked together to create these invaluable recordings. They have left behind them a priceless part of their cultural heritage.

Визначний внесок в історію фольклору Закарпаття

Дві і пів години співу, музики та приповідок у двомовній книзі та на компакт-диску – за неповних 300 корон

В 1929 р. реномована паризька фірма Pathй виготовила для Чеської академії наук одинадцять грамофонних пластинок з голосами 14 співаків й оповідачів із Закарпатської України та Пряшівщини. В 1935 р. празька фірма Радіожурнал випустила дальших 16 грампластинок із записами народних пісень у виконанні співацьких груп із шістьох сіл Закарпаття. Ініціатором записів (здійснених не для продажу, а для внутрішнього користання замовників) був тодішній професор Ужгородської гімназії (пізніше Празького університету) Іван Панькевич (1887-1958). Після смерті професора родина подарувала весь комплект пластинок (збережених лише в одному примірникові) його учневі Миколі Мушинці. Він ці унікальні матеріали видав у формі фольклорної антології, що охоплює 98 пісень з нотами, 14 казок, легенд, повістей та народних оповідань із 16 сіл (Орябина, Микулашова, Валяшківці, Руська Поруба, Пихні, Убля та інші). Передмову, дві післямови (проф. І. Сенька та Ф. Матуша), зміст та реєстри пісень у книзі опубліковано паралельно словацькою та українською мовами; фольклорні тексти – латинкою та азбукою. До багатьох фольклорних текстів, записаних на пластинках лише у фрагментах або скорочених версіях, М. Мушинка долучив їх повні варіанти, змісти казок, у веснянок – описи ігор та хороводів тощо. Книжку поповнено словником діалектних слів та резюме англійською та німецькою мовами.
Додатком до книжки є компакт-диск CD, на якому є ВСІ вищеназвані фольклорні матеріали – 112 зразків та 20 мелодій виконаних на різних музичних інструментах ( трембіті, теленці, флуярі, дрімбі, гуслях, цимбалі тощо). Звукові записи „очищені" від посторонніх шумів і на CD подані у двох версіях – комп'ютерній (у форматі МР 3 – 133 записи: 2 год., 39 хв. та 13 сек.) та вибір на звичайному диску (у форматі WAV audio – 28 записів: 42 хв.). Ці унікальні записи на CD звучать так чисто і ясно, якби були записані сучасною технікою.
Отак голоси 70-річної давності понад 50 носіїв фольклору (з яких вже ніхто не живе), повертаються до нас у формі книжки, яку в однаковій мірі може читати не лише словак та русин-українець, але кожен, хто володіє латинкою або азбукою. Більше того. Все написане в книзі читач може почути із компакт-диску (який легко переписати на аудіокасету), а незрозумілі діалектні слова розшифрувати за долученим словником. Публікація відповідає вимогам наукового видання, але естетичну насолоду одержать від неї і звичайні люди, яким не чужі традиції предків.
        У слов'янській фольклористиці публікація такого характеру є унікальною. Жоден слов'янський народ чи етнічна група подібної публікації не має. В добрій пригоді вона стане для науковців, членів народної художньої самодіяльності, але й усіх любутелів фольклору.
